The company Klana d.d. from the village of Klana in Gorski kotar is one of the largest manufacturers of chairs in Croatia and in the region of Southeast Europe. The company has a very long tradition dating back to 1911, when timber merchant Anton Medvidić had a steam sawmill built in Klana with a frame saw and circular saws powered by a locomobile. At that time, the company was called A. Medvidić - Timber Industry and Trade. After a fire in 1917, the sawmill, which employed thirty people, was completely renewed. Since 1920, the sawmill supplied electricity for the public street lighting of the whole village.
After the Second World War, the company started its activity in Klana again in 1946. At that time, in addition to the sawmill, there was a joiner’s workshop, a mechanic's workshop and an electric power station, and after 1950 the company also had a larger fleet of vehicles and a transport department. In the 1960s and 1970s, the company shifted its focus to the production and export of furniture made of solid wood and plywood, as well as cabinets and beds. After 1976, in addition to a new refining unit (solid furniture and interior furnishings), a new sawmill, a log yard with an overhead crane, a power plant where sawdust and wood residues were used as fuel, and also a new drying kiln were built in 1981. At the beginning of the 1990-ies, the company changed its legal form and became a joint-stock company, specializing in the production of chairs over the years.
